Be a Volunteer
TUSD Volunteer Procedures
Are you interested in volunteering in your child’s classroom? Below are the procedures you must follow to serve as a volunteer in your student’s classroom:
The Principal will then review the application and complete a screening through the Megan’s Law website. You will be contacted by the school if approved. Once approved, sign in at school office (each time you volunteer).
- Confirm that it is okay with the teacher
- Complete a volunteer application from the school site or Human Resources
- Obtain Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance (only Level II and III)
- Provide copy of Driver’s License (only Level II and III
Volunteer Levels
Level I
Level I volunteers are defined as volunteers who are supervised by a TUSD employee and have:
Procedures for Level I volunteers are as follows:
- Permission to observe only; or
- Direct student contact for one (1) hour or less per month; or
- Intermittent (no more than 4 times per year) student contact for classroom presentations, fundraising, and supporting special events.
- Complete a volunteer application from the school site or Human Resources.
- Sign in at the school office; tuberculosis testing or a background check is not required.
Level II
Level II volunteers are defined as volunteers who are supervised by a TUSD employee and have:
Procedures for Level II volunteers are as follows:
- More than one (1) hour of direct student contact; or
- Ongoing direct one-on-one or small group contact with students; or
- Weekly student contact by assisting in classrooms or chaperoning a study trip; or
- Completed driving requirements and are transporting our students.
- Complete a volunteer application;
- Provide a photo ID to be copied;
- Obtain Tuberculosis (TB) clearance through screening;
- Have the site administration conduct a background check through the Megan’s Law website;
- Obtain clearance through Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) driving record check or request the site secretary to email Maria Dolores Flores, Director of Transportation, their full name and driver’s license number to obtain this record (applicable only for volunteers with driving responsibilities); and
- Sign in at the school office.
Level III
Level III volunteers are defined as volunteers who have:
Procedures for Level III volunteers are as follows:
- Unsupervised direct contact with students (i.e. youth ministers, interns-special education, counseling).
- Complete a volunteer application;
- Provide a photo ID to be copied;
- Obtain Tuberculosis (TB) clearance through screening
- Obtain a Fingerprint Request Form from the school site;
- Complete paperwork and pay fees for the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check;
- Complete online Mandated Reporter training as directed by the Human Resources office; and
- Check-in per site procedures.
Notes
TUSD site administrators are ultimately responsible for determining and completing the appropriate level of screening for school volunteers at the school sites. Copies of all clearance information and forms can be obtained from the site offices.
- TUSD employees who are volunteering do not need to go through the volunteer application process. The site only needs to verify their employment with the Human Resources office. However, if they are driving, they do need to complete the driving portion of the process.
- TUSD students who are volunteering (i.e. CTE) do not need to go through the volunteer application process.
CSUS students need to follow the separate procedure which has been established for them. - Walk-on-Coaches need to follow the separate procedure which has been established for them.
- Drivers cannot bring their own adult passengers (i.e. spouse, friend) when transporting students unless this passenger has been through the TUSD volunteer process. Minors are okay.
